White Dorper
The hills of the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria’s South have proven to be an excellent breeding ground for the White Dorper shedding sheep.
The White Dorper is a fast growing, shedding meat sheep.
Like the Wiltipoll, it is an easy care sheep that produces a short light coat of wool and hair and then sheds in late spring and summer.
The breed was developed in South Africa and is now the second most popular breed in that country. The White Dorper adapts well to a variety of climatic and grazing conditions.
The White Dorper has a thick skin, which protects the sheep under harsh climatic conditions, its particular qualities include:
- Sheds its fleece annually – no need for shearing, crutching and fly control.
- Good meat production (ram live weight around 100kg and ewes averaging 70kgs)
- Fast growing ,year round breeders so quick results
- non-selective grazers and adapt well to most grazing conditions
- Fast growing – lambs grow well and quickly giving quick returns
- Year round breeder
